The Biggest Box Office Hits in Kannada cinema, 2013

Kannada films that have often been threatened by films from other states underwent a major transformation this year, in making, style and presentation.

As a result, they have successfully managed to bring back audiences to the cinema halls.

Around 122 films released in Kannada this year.

Here’s a look at some of the highest grossing films.

Varadanayaka

Director: Ayyappa P Sharma

Cast: Sudeep, Chiranjeevi Sarja, Sameera Reddy, Nikeesha Patel

Remake of the Telugu film Lakshyam, Varadanayaka brought together Sudeep and Chiranjeevi Sarja for the first time.

This was also the first film to be screened in Toronto by the Canada Kannada Sangha, to break the myth that Kannada films do not have an overseas market.

The film is said to have grossed around Rs 16 crore at the box office.

Charminar

Director: R Chandru

Cast: Prem Kumar, Meghana Gaonkar

Charminar received good reviews from critics and phenomenal response from audiences.

It is considered to be Prem Kumar’s best film to date.

Though the story had nothing new to offer, the film struck an emotional chord with the audience.

It completed 100 days and made Rs 6 crore at the box-office.

Myna

Director: Nagashekhar

Cast: Chetan, Nithya Menen

The film was based on a real incident. The director claimed that an ex-police officer narrated an incident from his case files that became the subject of Myna.

The film is a romantic drama. The hero falls in love with a physically challenged girl.

The film had a 100-day run and was declared a hit at the box office.

Simplagondu Love Story

Director: Suni

Cast: Rakshith Shetty, Swetha Srivastav

Loosely based on 50 First Dates, Simplagondu Love Story broke new ground at the Kannada box office.

Fresh pairing and storytelling captured the imagination of the Kannada audience.

It had a 100-day run even in the multiplexes in the state.

Bachchan

Cast: Sudeep, Bhavana, Jagapathi Babu

Shashank’s action thriller Bachchan had all the commercial ingredients popular with the masses and was a stupendous hit.

It is one of Sudeep’s best films. Telugu actor, Jagapathi Babu made his debut in Kannada in this film.
