Statistical Highlights Aiwa Cup 4th match: Australia v Sri Lanka at Colombo (Premadasa) on 26-8-99 (D/N)

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1488th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was Australia's 438th and Sri Lanka's 305th in LOIs.

This match was the 42nd meeting between the two sides.

Chamara Silva (aged 26 years), a right handed batsman, became the 101st Sri Lankan to appear in LOIs.

Steve Waugh was appearing in his 23rd match against Sri Lanka, which equals the Australian record of Allan Border for the maximum LOI matches against Sri Lanka.

Sanath Jayasuriya was appearing in his 28th match at this venue, which equals the record of fellow Sri Lankans Arjuna Rantunga and Aravinda deSilva for the maximum LOI matches at the Premadasa Stadium.

Although, Adam Gilchrist has already scored 2218 runs in his career in 72 matches; during his innings of 38 he reached his 2000th run as a keeper in 66 matches. He thus becomes the only fourth keeper in LOI history after Zimbabwean A Flower (3242 in 105 matches), Englishman Alec Stewart (2637 in 92), Sri Lankan Romesh Kaluwitharana (2049 in 119) to do so. At the end of the innings he has so far scored 2009 runs.

Mark Waugh's 84 was the best ever total by an Australian on Sri Lankan soil in a day-night encounter. The previous best was the 82 by brother Steve Waugh against Zimbabwe at this same venue on 26-8-1996. In fact only the Sri Lankans and the Indians have made bigger individual scores in a day-night match in Sri Lanka.

Muthiah Muralitharan's three wickets in the match has placed him in the first position among Sri Lankan wicket-takers with 161 wickets in 118 matches. He overtook Sanath Jayasuriya, who held the record for some time and is now just behind Muralitharan with 160 wickets in 186 matches.

The two catches each by Indika deSaram and Muralitharan equalled the record for the maximum catches by a Sri Lankan fielder against Australia in a LOI match. In fact this has been achieved by 12 fieldsmen on 20 occasions, with Roshan Mahanama and Muralitharan doing so on five and three occasions respectively.

The 40 run partnership between debutantant Chamara Silva and Upul Chandana for the 8th wicket fell just short of Sri Lanka's best against Australia which was 44 runs between Sanath Jayasuriya and Rumesh Ratnayake at Adelaide on 18-2-1990. However the Silva-Chandana partnership was Sri Lanka's best against any country at home. It betters the previous best of 35 between Aravinda deSilva and Pubudu Dassanayake at this same venue on 4-9-1993.

Chamara Silva (54) became the only third Sri Lankan batsman to score a fifty on LOI debut. The others being Brendon Kuruppu (72) against Pakistan at Swansea on 9-6-1983 and Sunil Wettimuny (53*) agaisnt Australia at The Oval on 11-6-1975. Silva's score was also the second highest on debut by a Sri Lankan.

Gilchrist's three dismissals (1ct+2st) was the best by an Australian keeper in a LOI match in Sri Lanka.

This was Australia's tenth consecutive match without defeat (which includes the tie match against South Africa at Birmingham on 17-6-99 - that came after five consecutive victories). This equals Australia best sequence without a defeat - from 23-2-1990 to 2-5-1990 when it won ten matches in a row. Incidentally Australia's last LOI defeat came at Leeds on 23-5-99 when it lost to Pakistan by 10 runs.

Mark Waugh in his 194th match was receiving his 17th Man of the match award of his career. It was his third such award against Sri Lanka - the maximum by an Australian player.
