West Indies versus Australia, second Test, Frank Worrell Trophy, Kingston, Jamaica

Mohandas Menon

West Indian Steve Bucknor was officiating in his 43rd Test match, which puts him in the number four position among Test umpires who have appeared in maximum matches. Now only Englishmen Harold Bird (66 matches), the late Frank Chester (48) and David Shepherd (46) are ahead of Bucknor.

Lincoln Roberts and Nehemiah Perry became the 228th and 229th West Indians to appear in Tests.

The 112 run partnership between the Waugh twins for the 4th wicket was their sixth 100-plus partnership together in Tests. Interestingly, their highest partnership was the 231 runs at this same venue in 1994-95. The full list, in order of runs, for which wicket, against whom, where and when, runs thus: 231, 4th wicket, West Indies, Kingston, 1994-95; 190, 4th wicket, England, Sydney, 1998-99; 153 for the 5th, England, Birmingham, 1993; 153 for the 4th, versus New Zealand, Perth in 1997-98; 116 for the 4th, versus South Africa at Sydney, 1997-98 and 112 4th West Indies, Kingston, 1998-99

Steve Waugh while scoring the 18th hundred of his career, recorded his maiden hundred (100) in only his second Test as captain. He now becomes the 19th Australian to score a Test hundred while captaining their country. It was the 96th such hundred for Australia in Tests. Just for the record, Allan Border scored the maximum hundreds - 15 - as a captain.

In the first innings, Stuart MacGill recorded his third consecutive 'duck'. Incidentally it was his fifth 'duck' in six innings and his sixth 'duck' in eight innings.

Shane Warne claimed his 50th catch when he held debutant Roberts. He becomes the 13th Australian and the 61st fieldsman in Test history to do so. By doing so in his 70th match, Warne joins Kim Hughes among other Australians to take maximum matches to achieve this milestone.

Warne now becomes the only seventh "all-rounder" in Test history to score 1000-plus runs, take 100-plus wickets and claim 50-plus catches during their career. The full list runs, Wilfred Rhodes of England, 2325 runs, 127 wickets and 60 catches; Richie Benaud of Australia, 2201 runs, 248 wickets and 65 catches; Gary Sobers of the West Indies, 8032 runs, 235 wickets and 109 catches; Antony Greig of England, 3599 runs, 141 wickets and 87 catches; Ian Botham of England, 5200 runs, 383 wickets and 120 catches, Kapil Dev of India, 5248 runs, 434 wickets and 64 catches and Shane Warne of Australia, 1333 runs, 316 wickets and 50 catches.

Although 344 runs were added by the West Indies for the fifth wicket, this consisted of two partnerships: Lara added 22 runs with Pedro Collins (retired hurt) and a further 322 runs with Jimmy Adams.

The 322 runs partnership was West Indies' fifth best for any wicket in Tests. The list runs thus: 446 for the second wicket, between Conrad Hunte and Gary Sobers, against Pakistan at Kingston, 1957-58; 399 for the 4th wicket, Gary Sobers and Frank Worrell, versus England at Bridgetown, 1959-60; 347 for the 7th wicket, between Atkinson and Depeiza, against Australia at Bridgetown, 1954-55; 338 for the third wicket, between Everton Weekes and Frank Worrell, versus England, Port of Spain, 1953-54.

As can be seen from the above list, the Lara-Adams partnership was West Indies' highest for the fifth wicket in Tests. The previous best was 265 between Seymour Nurse and Gary Sobers against England at Leeds in 1966. It also betters the previous best for the fifth wicket against Australia, which was 210 between Rohan Kanhai and Maurice Foster at this same venue in 1972-73.

The partnership was also the seventh highest by any team against Australia, the highest being the 382 put on by Englishman Len Hutton and Maurice Leyland for the 2nd wicket at the Oval in 1938. However, it was the best for the fifth wicket by any country against Australia, bettering the previous best of 210 between Kanhai and Foster (see above).

Playing in his 61st match, Lara (213) scored the 11th hundred and third double hundred of his career. Incidentally it was his first hundred in his last 16 Test matches. His last hundred before this one came against Sri Lanka at Kingstown (Arnos Vale) in June, 1997.

Lara's 213 was the sixth double hundred for West Indies against Australia, with Lara being the only one to do it twice.. His 277 at Syndey in 1992-93 remains the highest by a West Indian against Australia. It was also the highest at this venue (Kingston) bettering the previous best of 155 by Clyde Walcott in 1954-55.

Lara's 213 was the 25th 200-plus score made against Australia. Now, only Englishman Walter Hammond (on four occasions) have scored more double hundreds than Lara and South African Graeme Pollock, who have both scored two each against Australia.

Lara, like his Australian counterpart, Steve Waugh scored his maiden hundred (213) as captain. However, it came in his 14th Test. He now becomes the 10th West Indian to score a Test hundred while captaining his country. It was the 42nd such hundred for West Indies in Tests.

Lara also became the second West Indian to score a double hundred as a captain. Clive Lloyd's 242* against India at Mumbai in 1974-75 was the only other double-hundred by a West Indian captain.

Both Waugh and Lara provided the third instance of both captains scoring a hundred in the same match in a Aus-WI Test series. The details are given below: William Lawry of Australia (151) and Gary Sobers of the West Indies (113) at Sydney in 1968-69; Rohan Kanhai of the West Indies (105) and Ian Chappell of Australia (106) at Bridgetown, 1972-73 and Steve Waugh of Australia (100) and Brian Lara of the Windies, 213, Kingston, 1998-99.

Lara during his above innings, when on 75, reached his 5000th run in his 61st match and 104th innings. He becomes the eighth West Indian and 44th batsman in Test history to reach his milestone.

Lara during his innings of 213 crossed the milestone of 1000 runs as West Indies captain. He was playing in his 14th match and 24th innings and has now scored 1069 runs (avf 46.48). He joins four other West Indian batsmen who have scored over 1000 runs in Tests while captaining their country. The full list: Clive Lloyd, 74 matches, 111 innings, nine not outs, 5233 runs, 242* the highest, 51.30 average, 14 100s and 27 fifties; Garfield Sobers 39-71-11-3528-178*-58.80-11-15; Viv Richards 50-74-6-3068-146-45.12-6-23; Richie Richardson 24-39-2-1302-109-35.19-2-9; Brian Lara 14-24-1-1069-213-46.48-1-7.

Courtney Walsh took his dubious record tally of 'ducks' to 32 in 108 matches and 145 innings.

West Indies' total of 431 was the highest score made at this venue against Australia. The previous highest being 428 made during the 1972-73 series.

Playing in his second Test match, David Joseph's five catches in the match equals the West Indies record for the maximum catches in a Test match against Australia. Roy Fredericks (Port of Spain, 1972-73) and Carl Hooper (at Melbourne, 1996-97) are the only other fielders to do so.

The victory was West Indies' first after losing the last six Test matches. Now both Australia and West Indies have won three matches each at this venue, with three matches drawn.
