Statistical Highlights 4th match: India v New Zealand at Guwahati on 14-11-99

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1525th in Limited Over international (LOI) history.

This match was India's 424th and New Zealand's 336th in LOIs.

This match was the 56th meeting between the two sides.

This match was the 9th to be played at this venue. India has played six matches, while it was New Zealand's second at this venue. They played the West Indies on 1-11-1994 in the Wills World Series.

Sunil Joshi was appearing in his 50th LOI match. He becomes the 27th Indian and 208th player to do so in LOIs.

Thirunavukkarasu Kumaran, the right arm fast medium bowler from Tamil Nadu became the 126th player to represent India in LOIs.

He claimed a wicket (of Astle) off his seventh ball on debut.

The 96 run partnership between Roger Twose and Chris Cairns was New Zealand's best for the fourth wicket against India in India. The previous highest was the 79 runs put on by Adam Parore and Stephen Fleming at Delhi on 3-11-1994. However New Zealand's highest for the fourth wicket in India still remains as the 168 between Lee Germon and Chris Harris against Australia at Chennai on 11-3-1996 - in the 1996 World Cup.

The Twose-Cairns partnership narrowly misses out the highest for the fourth wicket at this venue, which still remains as the 103 between West Indians Carl Hooper and Keith Arthurton against New Zealand on 1-11-1994.

The run-out of Adam Parore was his 15th of this career. Now among New Zealanders he has the maximum dismissals of "run-outs". He went past the tally of Jeremy Coney and John Wright who have 14 run-outs each.

The partnership of 59 runs between Cairns & Chris Harris was the best for the sixth wicket at this venue bettering the previous best of 50 between Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny against the West Indies on 17-12-1983.

Sunil Joshi after his record haul of five wickets for six runs at Nairobi against South Africa on 26-9-1999, has not captured a wicket in 31 overs while conceding 124 runs in the last four matches.

The catch of Jadeja was Adam Parore's 84th dismissal of this career in his 96th match as keeper. He now equals the tally of fellow Kiwi Ian Smith (97 matches) to become the wicket-keeper with maximum dismissals for New Zealander in LOIs.

The partnership of 46 runs between Sunil Joshi and Nikhil Chopra was the best for the 8th wicket at this venue bettering the previous best of 28 runs between Sri Lankans Rumesh Ratnayake and Dulip Liyanage against South Africa on 19-11-1993.

Joshi (61*) recorded his maiden fifty of his career. His previous best was the 48 he made in his very first innings of his LOI career against Australia at Colombo (SSC) on 6-9-1996.

Incidentally, Joshi's unbeaten 61 was the highest by any Indian batsman batting at number eight. Kapil Dev's 60 against England at Leeds on 2-6-1982 at this same position was the previous highest by an Indian.

This was also the first occasion where a batsman was scoring a fifty-plus against New Zealand while batting at number eight.

Just for the record, the only other score of 50-plus by a batsman at number eight in a LOI match in India was the 79 by Pakistani Wasim Akram against Sri Lanka at Visakhapatnam earlier this year on 27-3-1999. Incidentally, Wasim's 79 was the highest ever by any batsman in LOIs batting at the number eight position.

It was New Zealand's fourth victory in India against the home team. The victory by 48 runs was also its second largest in India against the home team after its 99 run victory at Nagpur on 26-11-1995.

It was India's 64th loss after winning the toss and fielding first out of 137 such occasions. Now only Sri Lanka out of 108 occasions have lost more matches - 65 - after winning the toss and fielding.

Chris Cairns in his 114th match won his sixth man of the match award of his career. Incidentally it was Cairn' third such award against India.
