Statistical Highlights 3rd match: India v West Indies at Toronto on 14-9-99Mohandas Menon This match was the 1499th in Limited overs international (LOI) history. This match was India's 416th and West Indies's 379th in LOIs. This match was the 63rd meeting between the two sides. Merv Dillon, who recorded his career best figures of 5-51 (previous best was 4-20 against Australia at Port of Spain, 18-4-1999), conceded the second highest runs by a West Indian bowler while capturing five or more wickets. Curtly Ambrose had figures of 5-53 against Pakistan at Sharjah on 21-10-1991, while Winston Davis had also conceded 51 runs while taking a record seven wickets against Australia at Leeds on 11-6-1983. When he took the catch of M S K Prasad, West Indian keeper Ridley Jacobs took his 50th catch as a keeper in his 35th match. At the end the match, he has 52 catches and 8 stumpings to his credit. He now becomes the only second West Indian keeper after Jeff Dujon (182 catches) and the 18th keeper in LOI history to do so. The 36 extras by the West Indies was the maximum conceded by a team at this venue. The previous highest was 33 conceded by Pakistan against India on 18-9-1997. It also equals the maximum conceded by the Windies against India, at Brisbane on 11-1-1992. Sherwin Campbell, who had two successive fifties was dismissed "first-ball" in the second innings by Debasis Mohanty. Incidentally, Mohanty, who had become the first Indian bowler to take a wicket of the first ball of a LOI match, at Singapore also against West Indies just nine days ago on 5-9-99, has now become the third Indian bowler after Kapil Dev (wicket of West Indian Desmond Haynes, at Perth, 6-12-1991) and Venkatesh Prasad (of Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya, at Colombo, 18-7-1997) to dismiss a batsman of the first ball in the seccond innings of a match. Rahul Dravid's four catches provided the fourth instance of an Indian fielder taking four or more catches after Sunil Gavaksar, M Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar. He also becomes the 12th fielder to take four or more catches in LOI history, with South African Jonty Rhodes being the only one to take five catches, against West Indies at Bombay (Brabourne) on 14-11-1993. Dravid also becomes the third fielder after Rhodes (above) and Australian Mark Taylor (at Sydney, 8-12-1992) to do so against the West Indies. Incidentally, Mohammad Azharuddin, against Pakistan on 13-9-1997, was the only one, before Dravid, to take four catches at this venue. By also scoring a fifty (77) and by taking four catches in same match, Dravid joins two other fielders, interestingly all Indians, who have achieved this rare all-round feat. Azharuddin had scored 52 against Pakistan at Toronto on 13-9-1997 and Tendulkar 67 also against Pakistan at Dhaka on 11-1-1998 when they took four catches each. The partnership of 84 runs between Richardo Powell and Corey Collymore was West Indies' all-time best for the 8th wicket in LOIs. The pair betters the previous best of 65 runs between Carl Hooper and Winston Benjamin also against India at Nagpur on 8-12-1987. The above partnership however just fails to beat the highest for the 8th wicket against India by any team. The record of 88 runs still remains with South Africans Dave Richardson and Pat Symcox at Bombay during the Titan Cup final match on 6-11-1996. The partnership was also the best at this venue for the 8th wicket obliterating the previous best of 64 runs between Pakistanis Salim Malik and Saqlain Mushtaq against India on 13-9-1997. Powell, who scored 76 runs in 73 balls, needed 11 balls to get off the mark. He dominated the partnership with Collymore to such an extent that his partner's contribution was just two runs! For the first time in LOI history a batsman has completely monopolised a partnership of over 50 runs. Powell's seven sixes in this match takes his career tally of sixes to 23 in seven innings (and 8 matches). He has now scored 344 runs in just 302 balls and has a batting strike-rate of 113.91 runs per 100 balls. Powell now joins fellow West Indian Viv Richards as the only batsman in LOI history to hit seven or more sixes in a match on two occasions. Powell had hit eight sixes against India at Singapore during his innings of 124 just a week ago on 8-9-99. While Richards had twice hit seven sixes against Sri Lanka at Karachi on 13-10-87 and against India at Rajkot on 5-1-1988. Nikhil Chopra (5-21), who recorded the joint fourth best bowling figures by an Indian in LOIs, now has the second best figures by an Indian against the West Indies. It was also the all-time fourth best figures by a bowler against the Windies after fellow Indian Anil Kumble's 6-12 at Calcutta on 27-11-1993, South African Shaun Pollock's 6-35 at East London on 24-1-1999 and Australian Glenn McGrath's 5-14 at Manchester on 30-5-1999. Just for the record, Chopra's previous personal best figures were just 2-17, also against West Indies in this series on 11-9-99. It was also the second best figures at this venue after Sourav Ganguly's 5-16 against Pakistan on 18-9-1997. The DMC Cup was India's first LOI title for the year. It last won the three-nation Coca Cola Champions Trophy at Sharjah beating Zimbabwe in the final on 13-11-1998. Since then India had not won a tournament or a series. The Man-of-the-Match award was Rahul Dravid's fifth of his career in 99 matches. It was his second at this venue, where only Ganguly (6) has more such awards.
