Lawson 'tricks' in Windies win

The West Indies, Ireland, England and Sri Lanka posted victories on the opening day of the under-19 World Cup Cricket Championship in Sri Lanka yesterday.

The West Indies, thanks to a hat-trick fast by bowler Jermaine Lawson, prevailed over Zimbabwe by 57 runs in a Group A, rain-curtailed match in Colombo. Lawson captured three wickets - that of Friend, Ewing and Masakadza - in the last over to restrict Zimbabwe to 92 for nine in 31 overs while chasing 150 to win in 31 overs.

The West Indies had scored 234 for six from their allotted 50 overs, but Zimbabwe's target was revised following heavy rain. Lawson finished with four for six from four overs while new ball bowler Callitos Lopez claimed three for 16.

West Indies' 234 for six in 50 overs revolved around Ryan Hinds and Marlon Samuels who stroked half centuries. Skipper Hinds scored 58 off 86 balls, with four boundaries while vice-captain Samuels got a breezy 83 off 61 balls with six fours and three sixes.

England were easy eight-wicket winners over America in Group A.

The Americans, batting first after winning the toss, were dismissed for 105 in 33.1 overs. Extras emerged the highest scorer with 25 runs. England fast bowler Murtagh bagged four wickets for 33 runs from eight overs while Phillips (two for 21) and Pattison (two for 16) were the other wicket-takers. England reached the small target in 19.1 overs for the loss of two wickets.

Australian too won easily, whipping Namibia by 266-runs in Group D. An unbeaten 100 by Watson, helped by three other half centuries, propelled Australia to 321 for two in 50 overs.

Namibia were bowled out for 55 in 30.4 overs with wicketkeeper Burger scoring 11.

Sri Lanka beat Ireland by eight wickets in another Group D match.

Ireland were dismissed for 143 in 47.1 overs. Sri Lanka overhauled Ireland's score in 23.2 overs losing two wickets.
