This match was South Africa's 178th and Zimbabwe's 139th in LOIs. This match was the 10th meeting between the two sides. This was the 12th match to be played at this venue. Alistair Campbell (29) when on 4, became the third Zimbabwean after Andy Flower (3794 runs) and Grant Flower (3670 runs) and the 59th batsman in LOI history to reach the milestone of 3000 runs. Murray Goodwin's 73 was the highest score by a Zimbabwean number four against South Africa. The previous highest score was the 29 by Andy Flower at Chelmsford on 29-5-1999. It was the highest score by a Zimbabwean batsman at this venue. The previous highest score was the 62 by Grant Flower also against South Africa on 31-1-1997. During his unbeaten 83 (when on 3) Hansie Cronje became the first South African to reach 5000 runs in LOIs. He also became the 24th batsman in LOI history to do so. His unbeaten 83 was the highest score by a South African number five against Zimbabwe. The previous highest score was the 38 by Gary Kirsten at Harare on 22-10-1995. Cronje's unbeaten 83 was also the highest score by a captain at this venue. The previous highest was the 81 by Cronje himself against Pakistan on 10-12-1994. The partnership of 104 between Hershelle Gibbs and Cronje was the highest for the fourth wicket at this venue by any team. The previous highest was the 101 partnership between South Africans Jacques Kallis and Daryll Cullinan against Australia on 8-4-1997. Zimbabwe bowlers conceded 25 wides which equals the maximum conceded by them in a LOI match. They had conceded 25 extras against Kenya at Taunton on 15-5-1999. It was also the maximum wides conceded against South Africa by any team in LOIs. However Zimbabwe's 41 extras was its maximum it conceded in a LOI match. The previous highest it conceded was 39 extras against India at Leicester 19-5-1999. Incidentally, it was the maximum extras conceded against a South African team in LOIs. The previous highest was the 38 conceded by Pakistan at Nottingham on 5-6-1999. This was Cronje's 90th win as captain in 123 matches. He now equals the tally of India's M Azharuddin (in 174 matches). Now only Australian captain Allan Border has more wins - 107 (in 178 matches) in LOIs. The man of the match award was Cronje's 17th of his career. It also extends his tally of such awards to the maximum by any South African in LOIs. Incidentally it was Cronje's fourth award at this venue, where no other player has received it more than once.
