IT searches Sangeeta's flat in Pune
The Income Tax authorities Friday night searched the flat belonging to film actress Sangeeta Bijlani, wife of cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin, at Palace Orchard, in Undri suburb on the outskirts of Pune. IT sources said the flat, which was earlier sealed, was opened in the presence of Sangeeta's brother Sunil Bijlani. Another flat which has been sealed is situated next to Sangeeta's flat and belongs to her relative. It will be searched soon, sources said. Meanwhile, the authorities have begun a detailed examination of a large number of documents and other materials seized across the country during the raids carried out in about 100 residential and official premises of top cricketers including Kapil Dev, Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and former International Cricket Council chief Jagmohan Dalmiya. Raids were also carried out at the premises of Nikhil Chopra, Navjot Singh Siddhu, Ajay Sharma and BCCI treasurer Kishore Rungta, as well as six bookies in various parts of the country. Director General (Investigation) of Income Tax S C Parija said Friday that the two day searches, codenamed 'Operation Gentleman' yielded more clinching evidence of undisclosed income by some of the prominent players and documents than what the department had expected. Top IT sources said the department was planning to open the bank lockers sealed during the searches next week. IT officials said they had come across "huge cash transactions and investments" in movable and immovable properties by cricketers and sealed about 60 bank lockers, including six belonging to Dalmiya.
