Army Eleven too good for SRC

Army Eleven drubbed Sikh Regimental Centre, Ranchi, 3-0, while CISF, Delhi, and Border Security Force split points after a 1-1 draw in the Pool B quarter-final matches of the Indian Oil Servo Beighton Cup hockey tournament, at the Mohun Bagan ground, in Calcutta on Tuesday.

In the day's first match, CISF and BSF fought an evenly contested match with neither team sparing any effort to outwit the other.

BSF shot into the lead via a Peter Tirkey penalty-corner.

Stung by the reverse CISF laid siege on the BSF defence, forcing the equaliser through a penalty-corner within a couple of minutes after the change over.

Mangra Munda directed the ball into the net with a delectable hit to level the scores at 1-1.

After the equaliser, CISF made waves of attacks in the BSF territory but failed to capitalise due to poor marksmanship by their strikers.

The second match between Army Eleven and SRC, however, proved to be a damp squib, with Army Eleven running amock, scoring thrice and missing many more goals.

The armymen took the lead in the third minute through an Avtar Singh penalty-corner. Avtar was among goals again when he netted his and the match's second goal through another penalty-corner five minutes before the change over (2-0). Rajpal Singh completed the tally, scoring a field goal four minutes before close.
