When tennis almost had a 'fix'

A great battle of sexes between Vijay Amritraj and the then world No 1 Steffi Graf almost took place three years ago before the match fell through following an unusual demand by the fraulein.

Speaking to newsmen in Bombay on Tuesday, to announce the Legends' tour tournament in Bombay, Vijay revealed that about three years ago an organiser had arranged a match between the two personalities on the lines of the historical Bobby Riggs - Billie Jean-King duel.

"The dates were fixed, the money was agreed upon but then Steffi demanded that she should win," Amritraj said, adding it was a nonstarter as he refused to concede.

Indeed, had he agreed to the German icon's demand, the match would have preceded cricket as the first 'fixed' sporting event in the country!
