Terrence Trammell clocked the fastest times in the world this year over 60 metres and 60 metres hurdles on Saturday at the latest stop on the U.S. Track & Field's Indoor Golden Spike Tour.
Trammell, the 2001 world indoor champion over 60 metres hurdles, ran 7.42 seconds at Fayetteville, benefiting from a quick start to hold off Larry Wade (7.44) and Jamaican Dwight Thomas (7.61).
Trammell also won a thrilling race in the 60 metres, clocking 6.46 seconds to eclipse world record holder Maurice Greene.
Greene was first out of the blocks but Trammell produced a powerful drive to snatch victory ahead of John Capel (6.48) and Greene (6.50).
"Maurice was ahead for the first 10-15 meters," Trammell told reporters. "I wanted to keep my composure.
"I always try to run through to the finish. I was trying to stay focused throughout the race and execute.
"Running two races helps me hone in on what I need to do. I was just in the zone. I love this track and I look forward to competing here in the future."
"I was very aggressive, I just have no excuses," said Greene. "Terrence ran a good race.
"I was in a good position and I should have been able to carry it through. I love this meet and will run a lot faster, guaranteed. This is the fastest track in the world."
Elsewhere, world number one Savante Stringfellow leapt 8.29 metres in the men's long jump to narrowly defeat world number two Miguel Pate (8.27 metres). They were the first and second best performances in the world this year.
Kenyan Laban Rotich won the men's mile in 3:55.34, another world best for 2003. Jason Lunn (3:55.49), Canadian Graham Hood (3:55.70) and Chris Mulvaney (3:58.94) also dipped under Kenyan Bernard Lagat's previous best for the year -- 4:00.36.
Triple world outdoor champion Gail Devers turned in another strong showing in the women's 60m hurdles, winning her second race in as many weeks with a time of 7.85 seconds.
