Chetan Anand and Trupti Murgunde bowed out after losing their first round singles matches at the World Badminton Championships at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
National champion Anand put up a brave front against ninth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia but went down 11-21, 21-14, 21-18.
Murgunde lost to Pui Yin Yip of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-13 in the women's draw.
The only Indian win on Tuesday came through the men's doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas, who beat France's Svetoslav Stoyanov and Mihail Popov 21-9, 21-15.
The duo will meet Hendra A Gunawan and Joko Riyadi of Indonesia in the second round.
Anup Sridhar and Saina Nehwal will play their second round singles matches on Wednesday.
