Statistical hightlights: SA v WI at Cape Town

Lance Klusener was appearing in his 150th match since his limited-overs international debut in January 1996. He becomes seventh South African and the 69th player in history to reach this landmark.
The 102-run partnership between Brian Lara and Shivnaraine Chanderpaul was the West Indies' best against South Africa in the World Cup for the third wicket. The previous best was the 30-run stand put on by Lara and Richie Richardson at Karachi on 11-3-1996.
The above partnership is now the highest by any team against South Africa in the World Cup, obliterating the previous best of 85 runs put on by Pakistanis Inzamam-ul Haq and Imran Khan at Brisbane on 8-3-1992.
Best partnerships against SA for third wkt in the World Cup:

The Lara-Chanderpaul partnership was the only second 100-plus stand for the third wicket at Newlands, Cape Town. The pair however failed to go past the best, which still remains as the 123 runs between Australians Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh against the home team on 6-4-1994.
The West Indian pair also just failed to surpass their best for the third wicket against South Africa, which still remains as the 105 runs put on by Phil Simmons and Richie Richardson at Kingston on 7-4-1992.
This was Lara's third hundred (116 in 134 balls) against South Africa, which equals the tally of three hundreds each by Sachin Tendulkar Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly -- the most three figure scores made against the South Africans in LOIs.
Lara becomes the first batsman to score two hundreds against South Africa in the World Cup. Incidentally, the last West Indian to score a World Cup hundred was Brian Lara (111) also against South Africa at Karachi in 1996. The only other batsmen to score single hundreds against South Africa in the World Cup are: 111 by Pakistani Aamer Sohail at Karachi on 29-2-1996 and 120 (not out) by Australian Steve Waugh at Leeds on 13-6-1999.
Lara's 116 was the only fourth hundred to be made at this ground. The only other visiting batsman to score one was New Zealand's Roger Twose (103) on 4-11-2000.
100s at Cape Town...

This was Brian Lara's second consecutive century. His previous innings prior to this one was the 111 (in 120 balls) he made against Kenya at SSC, Colombo on 17-9-2002 in the ICC Trophy. This was the third occasion during his distinguished career Lara had achieved the feat of scoring successive hundreds in two innings.
Ricardo Powell's whirlwind knock of unbeaten 40 runs in 18 balls (S/r: 222.22) was the quickest in the history of the World Cup among batsmen who have scored at least 40 runs in a match. The previous quickest was the unbeaten 56 in 29 balls (S/r: 193.10) by Australian Tom Moody against Bangladesh at Chester-le-Street in the 1999 the World Cup.
Whirlwind knocks in the World Cup: (Qualification: 40 or more runs)

The unbeaten partnership of 63 runs between Powell and Ramnaresh Sarwan was the best for the West Indies against South Africa for the sixth wicket. The pair betters the previous best stand of 61 runs between Lara and Ridley Jacobs at Bridgetown on 9-5-2001.
The above partnership was also the best against South Africa for the sixth wicket in the World Cup. The previous best was the 50 run stand between Englishmen Neil Fairbrother and Chris Lewis at Melbourne on 12-3-1992.
The West Indies' 278-5 was the highest ever total recorded by any team against South Africa in the World Cup. The previous best was the 272-5 (in 49.4 overs) by Australia at Leeds on 13-6-1999.
Incidentally this was the West Indies' second highest total in a 50-over match in the World Cup. The highest still remains as the 360-4 it made against Sri Lanka at Karachi in the 1987 edition on 13-10-1987.
Playing in his 75th match, Merv Dillon became the 11th West Indian to claim 100 LOI wickets when he claimed the wicket of Hershelle Gibbs. Dillon also became the 61st bowler in LOI history to reach this landmark.
The wicket of Boeta Dippenaar was Carl Hooper's 150th wicket in 165 away LOI matches. Interestingly, Hooper only has 41 wickets in 57 matches at home. He becomes the third West Indian bowler after Courtney Walsh (181 wickets) and Curtly Ambrose (160) to reach this landmark.
Most "away" career wickets for the West Indies

Mark Boucher's 49 was the highest score by a South African keeper in a World Cup tournament. The previous best was the 34 made by Boucher himself against India at Hove on 15-5-1999.
The match aggregate of 553 runs (for 14 wickets) was the highest ever at this venue bettering the previous best of 514 runs (for 16 wickets) between New Zealand and the home team on 4-11-2000.
The man of the match award was Brian Lara's 28th of his career in 204 matches. The award was also his 4th in 20 World Cup matches.
