India vs Namibia, Pietermaritzburg

  • Burton van Rooi became the 15th player to appear in a limited-overs international and World Cup match.
  • The 244-run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly was the eighth highest for any wicket in LOIs. It was the fifth highest partnership for the second wicket in LOIs. Interestingly, the top eight partnerships in LOIs now involve Indians on six occasions and Pakistanis on two occasions.
  • The partnership was the only second highest for any wicket in the World Cup after the 318 stand also for the 2nd wicket by Indians, Ganguly and Rahul Dravid against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-5-1999.
  • Tendulkar's 152 was his fourth three-figure score in the World Cup in 26 matches. He now equals the tally of Australian Mark Waugh (22 matches) to become the joint holder for the most individual hundreds in the World Cup.
  • This was Tendulkar's highest score in the World Cup, eclipsing his previous best effort of 140 not out against Kenya at Bristol on 23-5-1999.
  • Ganguly, meanwhile, recorded his 20th hundred in 222 matches. Now only Tendulkar (34) has more hundreds in LOIs than Ganguly. The left-hander went past the tally of 19 hundreds by another left-hander -- Pakistani Saeed Anwar.
  • By scoring his 34th hundred in 307 matches, Tendulkar now has three figure scores against ten different countries. Ganguly's unbeaten 112 also makes him the second batsman in LOI history to achieve this rare feat.  Both Australian Mark Waugh and South African Hershelle Gibbs have scored hundreds against nine teams.
  • By scoring two hundreds in the same match, Indian batsmen have now achieved this feat on three separate occasions in the World Cup -- against Kenya at Bristol and Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 edition of the World Cup. The West Indies is the only other team to score two hundreds in the same World Cup match. However the team from the Caribbean has done it only once -- against Sri Lanka at Karachi in the 1987 World Cup.
  • Occasional left-arm spinner Yuvraj Singh's 4-6 in 4.3 overs was his best bowling performance of his career in 63 matches bettering his previous best of 3-39 against England at Lord's on 29-6-2002.
  • Only two other bowlers have captured four or more wickets in a LOI match and have conceded lesser runs than Yuvraj. They are West Indians Courtney Walsh (5-1 in 4.3 overs against Sri Lanka at Sharjah on 3-12-1986) and Phil Simmons (4-3 in 10 overs against Pakistan at Sydney on 17-12-1992). Incidentally, former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi had taken five wickets for six runs in 10 overs against South Africa at Nairobi Gymkhana on 26-9-1999.
  • Yuvraj's figures of 4-6 now represents the most wickets taken by a bowler while conceding the least runs in the World Cup match. England pace bowler Chris Old had figures of 4-8 against Canada at Manchester on 14-6-1979.
  • Yuvraj's 4-6 was the best bowling performance by an Indian spinner in the World Cup. Leg-spinner Anil Kumble's 4-32 against Holland on 12-2-2003 at Paarl had the previous best figures by an Indian spinner in the World Cup.
  • Yuvraj incidentally became the first left-arm slow bowler in World Cup history to take a four-wicket haul. The previous best figures by a left-arm spinner in the World Cup was the 3-12 by Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya against India at Calcutta on 13-3-1996.
  • Namibia's total of 130 was lowest against the Indian team in the World Cup in a 50-over match. Prior to this match, the lowest was the 135  by Zimbabwe at Mumbai in 1987.
  • The 181-run victory was India's second biggest margin in terms of runs in LOIs after the 186 run win against Kenya at Paarl on 24-10-2001. However this win was India best in a World Cup match. The Indians had beaten the Sri Lankans by 157 runs at Taunton on 26-5-1999.
