This was the year a third venue was added to the World Cup roster -- the competition, this time, being hosted by Australia and New Zealand in tandem.
The tournament provided many fascinating aspects for the connoisseur. Home side New Zealand's innovative tactics under captain Martin Crowe was one of them. The entry of South Africa onto the World Cup stage was another. The anomalous rain rule, that made a mockery of South Africa's clash against England, was one of the downsides. And finally, there was Pakistan -- a team that started badly, found its second wind, peaked at just the right time and, powered by the likes of Inzamam ul Haq and Wasim Akram, pulled off a come from behind win.
