Statistical Highlights 34th match: India v Pakistan at Manchester on 8-6-1999Mohandas Menon This match was the 1476th in Limited over international (LOI) history. This match was the 192nd in World Cup history. This match was India's 404th and Pakistan's 431st in LOIs. Pakistan equals Australia's record of having played in maximum matches. This match was India's 43rd and Pakistan's 44th in the WC. It was their 78th meeting in LOIs and their only third in the WC. This match was the 28th LOI and the 10th in the WC to be played at this venue. This venue had hosted the Australia-West Indies WC encounter on 30-5-1999. Azharuddin was captaining India for the 22nd occasion in the WC. He now equals the record of Pakistani Imran Khan. It was Azhar's 173rd match as a LOI captain. He was also leading his country for the 25th occasion against Pakistan to equal West Indian Viv Richards. However, the record of captaining in most matches against Pakistan - 47 is held by Sri Lankan Arjuna Ranatunga. Sadagoppan Ramesh became the tenth opening partner of Sachin Tendulkar in LOIs. The others being: AjayJadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Vikram Rathour, Nayan Mongia, Sujit Somasundar, Sourav Ganguly, Sanjay Manjrekar and WV Raman. Tendulkar (45) playing in his 21st match when on 2, reached his 1000th run in the WC to become the third batsman to do so. The others were Pakistani Javed Miandad (1083 runs in 33 matches) and West Indian Viv Richards (1013 in 23). At the end of his innings, he now occupies the second position with 1043 runs. Tendulkar later in his innings, when on 7, reached his 8000th run in his 217th match to become the only fourth batsman in LOI history to do so, after fellow Indian Azharuddin, West Indian Desmond Haynes and Sri Lankan Aravinda deSilva. Rahul Dravid when on 29, reached his 400th run for this competition. He becomes the tenth batsman in WC history to do so. Fellow Indian Tendulkar had scored 523 runs during the 1996 WC - the maximum scored in any WC tournament. Dravid has so far scored 432 runs in this WC. The partnership of 51 runs between Dravid and Azhar was India's best for the fourth wicket against Pakistan in the WC. The previous best was the 46 run partnership between Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli at Sydney in the 1992 WC. Azhar at the end of his innings has scored 735 runs as a captain against Pakistan. Only Sri Lankan Ranatunga has scored more - 1468 runs. Azhar also became the second batsman in the WC to aggregate 600 runs while captaining his side. At the end of his innings he has aggregated 606 runs in 22 matches. Only Pakistani Imran Khan has scored more - 615 runs in the same number of matches. Azhar's 59 was his 57th score of 'fifty' (i.e. scores between 50-99). He now equals the LOI record of West Indian Desmond Haynes for the maximum individual scores of 'fifties' in LOIs. The wicket of Azhar was Wasim Akram's 132nd as captain in his 90th match. He now holds the LOI record for the maximum wickets as a captain, which was previously held by fellow Pakistani Imran Khan. Imran had taken 131 wickets as captain in 139 matches. The partnership of 60 runs between Azhar and Robin Singh was India's best for the fifth wicket against Pakistan in the WC. The previous best was the 26 run partnership between Vinod Kambli and Ajay Jadeja at Bangalore in the 1996 WC. Saqlain Mushtaq without a wicket and by conceding 67 runs produced his worst performance of his career. His previous worst was also against India at Sharjah on 15-4-1996 when he had figures of 0-60 in 10 overs. The wicket of Afridi was Javagal Srinath's 25th in the WC. Among Indians, now only Kapil Dev (28 wickets) has taken more. Srinath at the end of the match has a tally of 27 WC wickets. Anil Kumble's two catches in the match takes his tally of catches to 12 in 13 matches, which equals the WC record held by West Indians Clive Lloyd and Desmond Haynes, Indian Kapil Dev and Englishman Graeme Hick. Venkatesh Prasad's 5-27 was the best figures by an Indian bowler in the WC. The previous best was the 5-31 by Robin Singh against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-5-1999. It was the best figures by a bowler against Pakistan in the WC. The previous best was 5-34 by Australian Dennis Lillee at Leeds in the 1975 WC. It was also the best by an Indian bowler against Pakistan in the WC. The previous best figures were held by Prasad himself when he claimed 3-45 at Bangalore in the 1996 WC. It was Prasad's personal best figures of his career. His previous best was 4-17 which also came against Pakistan at Colombo (SSC) on 20-7-1997. It was the second best figures at this venue. The best remains as the 5-14 by Australian Glenn McGrath against West Indies on 30-5-1999. With this defeat Pakistan has lost all its six matches it has played at this venue. This was Pakistan's third successive WC defeat. It equalled Pakistan's worst losing sequence in the WC, which was from 30-10-1987 (v WI at Karachi) to 23-2-1992 (v WI at Melbourne). Now this sequence was its worst in a single WC tournament. India has now won all its three WC matches against Pakistan. The previous two victories came at Sydney in 1992 and Bangalore in 1996. It was Prasad's only second Man of the match award of his career. His only other award came against England at Sharjah just a couple of months ago - on 11-4-1999.
