Statistical Highlights 7th match: England v Kenya at Canterbury, 18-5-1999

•This match was the 1449th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

•This match was the 165th in World Cup history

•This match was England's 298th and Kenya's 27th in LOIs.

•This match was England's 42nd and Kenya's 8th in the WC.

•This was the first meeting between the two sides in LOIs.

•The St Lawrence Ground, at Canterbury (Kent) became the 111th city and 125th ground to host a LOI match. It was England's 17th city/town and 18th international ground. Considered one of the most attractive grounds in England, its famous for its lime tree that stands within the boundary and guarantees a four should you hit it.

• Sri Lankan KT Francis was officiating in his 50th match. He becomes the 12th umpire to officiate in 50 or more LOI matches. South African Rudi Koertzen, who umpired the opening match was officiating in his 48th LOI match.

• Graham Thorpe became the 17th Englishman and 204th player to appear in 50 LOI matches

• The 100 run partnership between Ravindu Shah and Steve Tikolo was Kenya's all time best for the second wket in LOIs. They bettered the previous best of 84 runs put on by Kennedy Otieno and Tikolo against Bangladesh at Nairobi (Gymkhana) on 10-10-1997. The pair also surpassed Kenya's best for this wicket in a WC match, which was 53 between Otieno and Dipak Chudasama against Zimbabwe at Patna on 27-2-1996.

•The above partnership was the only second hundred-plus partnership against England by a non-Test playing country. Holland's Klaas Jan van Noortwijk and Bastiaan Zuiderent had put on 114 for the fifth wicket at Peshawar in the 1996 WC.

• When he claimed the wicket of Maurice Odumbe, Darren Gough captured his 100th LOI wicket in his 62nd match. He becomes the only third Englishman, after Ian Botham (145 wickets in 116 matches) and Philip de Freitas (115 in 103) to do so. He also becomes the 46th bowler in LOI history to do so.

•By achieving this milestone in just 62 matches, Gough is now the seventh quickest among bowlers in terms of least matches. Pakistani Saqlain Mushtaq needed just 53 matches to achieve his milestone.Just to put Gough achievement in the right perspective, Botham needed 75 matches, while de Freitas required 87 matches.

•Tikolo's 71 was the highest individual score made by a non-Test playing batsman against England. The previous best was 64 runs by Holland's Klaas Jan van Noortwijk at Peshawar in the 1996 WC.

•At the end of his innings, Tikolo has taken his run aggregate to 768 runs in 27 matches for Kenya. He now overtakes fellow team-mate Otieno (761 runs in 27 matches) to become the highest run-getter not only for Kenya but also among other non-Test playing countries.

•Gough's figures of 4-34 was the second best against Kenya in the WC. Zimbabwean Paul Strang's 5-21 at Patna in the 1996 WC remains the best.

• Gough has now taken his tally of wickets to 40 in 22 matches on English soil. Only Ian Botham (56 wickets in 47 matches) and Bob Willis (45 in 32) have taken more wickets than Gough in LOIs played in England.

•Gough has also taken his tally of wickets for this calendar year to 31 in 18 matches. Only Australian Shane Warne with 35 wickets in 20 matches has more wickets than Gough during this year.

•The unbeaten partnership of 159 runs between Naseer Hussain and Graeme Hick was the second best for England for the 2nd wicket in the WC. The partnership of 176 between Dennis Amiss and Keith Fletcher in the first ever WC match in 1975 against India at Lord's remains the best.

•However the above partnership was the all-time best against Kenya for the 2nd wicket in LOIs. The pair obliterated the previous best of 150 runs by the Zimbabweans Grant Flower and Gavin Rennie at Nairobi (Gym) on 19-10-1997.

•The partnership was also the best against Kenya for the 2nd wicket in the WC. The pair bettered the previous best of 38 runs between Zimbabweans Neil Johnson and Paul Strang in Kenya's last match at Taunton on 15-5-1999.

•Hussain's 88* was his only third score of fifty-plus in his 30th LOI match. Interestingly, his other two scores over ffity have both come during this calendar year against Australia at Sydney. His scores were 93 (17-1-1999) and 58 (10-2-1999).

• Graeme Hick (61*) when on 33 became the sixth batsman to reach 1000 runs in LOI matches played in England. It was his 25th match in England. The others to do so are Graham Gooch (1867 runs in 47 matches), Alan Lamb (1434 in 42), David Gower (1387 in 45), West Indian Viv Richards (1345 in 31) and Alec Stewart (1158 in 33). Hick at the end of the match has 1028 runs to his credit.

• England's nine wicket win was its second such victory in the WC. England had beaten Sri Lankan by the same margin at Leeds in the 1983 WC.

• Steve Tikolo has now won three "Man of the match" awards for Kenya - the most by a Kenyan in LOIs. He becomes the second Kenyan, after Maurice Odumbe, to win a MOM award in the WC. Odumbe had won his award at Pune when his team beat the mighty West Indians during the 1996 WC.
