This match was 16th meeting between the two sides and their third in the WC. The County Ground, New Road at Worcester was hosting its only third LOI match. This venue now has the distinction of being the first to host two matches in this WC. The Australia-Scotland match was played here on 16-5-1999. Alistair Campbell became the second Zimbabwean, after Andy Flower to appear in 100 LOI matches. He also becomes the 93rd player in LOI history to do so. The partnership of 44 runs between Grant Flower and Murray Goodwin was Zimbabwe's best against Sri Lanka for the 3rd wicket in the WC. The previous best was 41 runs between Alistair Campbell and Guy Whittall at Colombo in 1996. The partnership of 68 runs between Andy Flower and Stuart Carlisle jt failed to beat by one run Zimbabwe's best against Sri Lanka for the seventh wicket. The record still remains as 69 runs between Ali Shah and Eddo Brandes at Sharjah on 3-2-1993. Romesh Kaluwitharana's three catches equals Sri Lanka's best by a keeper in the WC. Hashan Tillekeratne had twice taken three catches in the match in the 1992 edition of the WC. First was against Zimbabwe at New Plymouth and next came against West Indies at Berri. Pramodaya Wickremasinghe's 3-30 was the best by a Sri Lankan against Zimbabwe in the WC. The previous best was 2-30 by Chaminda Vaas at Colombo in 1996. It was also the best bowling at this venue. The previous best was 3-36 by West Indian Andy Roberts also against Zimbabwe on 13-6-1983. The second wicket partnership of 62 runs between Mahanama and Atapattu was Sri Lanka best against Zimbabwe in the WC. The previous best was the paltry 18 runs between Sanath Jayasuriya and Asanka Gurusinha at Colombo in 1996. Guy Whittall's 3-35 was the best figures by Zimbabwean against Sri Lanka in the WC. The previous best was 3-60 by Heath Streak at Colombo in 1996. Kaluwitharana when on 8 reached his 2000th run in his 115th LOI match. He becomes the third keeper in LOI history to do so after Englishman Alec Stewart and Zimbabwean Andy Flower. He also becomes the eight Sri Lanka and the 80th batsman in LOI history to reach this milestone. Sri Lanka recorded its 12th victory over the Zimbabweans in 16 LOI matches. This was Zimbabwe's first defeat after seven consecutive victories starting from 19-3-1999. . The Man of the match award was the sixth for Marvan Atapattu in his 72nd LOI match for Sri Lanka.
