Statistical Highlights 19th match: England v Zimbabwe, at Nottingham on 25-5-1999

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1461st in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 177th in World Cup history.

This match was England's 300th and Zimbabwe's 121st in LOIs.

This match was England's 44th and Zimbabwe's 30th in the WC.

This match was the seventh between the two sides in LOIs and the second in the WC.

This was the first meeting between the two sides in England.

The Trent Bridge ground at Nottingham (Nottinghamshire) was hosting its 19th LOI match and its ninth WC match. The ground, incidentally celebrates its centenary in June this year.

Grant Flower's 35 was the highest by a Zimbabwean batsman against England in the WC. The previous highest was the 29 by Dave Houghton at Albury in the 1992 WC.

The two catches by Graham Thorpe equals the best by an English fieldsman against Zimbabwe. Neil Faribrother (at Albury, 18-3-1992) and Mike Atherton (at Harare, 1-1-1997) were the others to do so.

The 38 run partnership between Alistair Campbell and Guy Whittall was Zimbabwe's best for the sixth wicket against England in LOIs. The previous best was the 30 runs between Campbell and Houghton at Harare on 3-1-1997.

Alec Stewart's catch of counterpart Alistair Campbell was his 100th in 91st match as a keeper. He becomes the first Englishman and the seventh keeper in LOI history to do so. Just for the record, Stewart has in all appeared in 124 matches and has held 111 catches (with 11 catches coming while not keeping wickets).

The third wicket partnership of 123 runs between Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe was England's first hundred-plus partnership against Zimbabwe in LOIs. The previous highest was 66 runs for the 2nd wicket between Alec Stewart and John Crawley at Harare on 1-1-1997. It also surpasses England's best for the third wicket against Zimbabwe which was 52 runs between Mike Atherton and Thorpe at Brisbane on 7-1-1995.

The Hussain-Thorpe stand just failed to surpass the record third wicket partnership at this venue which was 129 runs between Robin Smith and Neil Fairbrother against Pakistan on 20-8-1992.

Hussain (57*) became the first English player to carry his bat throughout an innings on two occasions in the WC. Hussain (88*) had also carried his bat against Kenya at Canterbury on 18-5-1999. Graeme Fowler (78*, v Pakistan at Lord's, 1983) was the only other Englishman to carry his bat in a WC match.

Thorpe's 62 was the highest by an English batsman against Zimbabwe in the WC. The previous best was the 29 by Alec Stewart at Albury in 1992. This was England's only second victory over Zimbabwe in seven matches. The last occasion England won (by 26 runs) was at Brisbane on 7-1-1995. The last time the teams met in a WC match was at Albury in March, 1992 when Zimbabwe won by nine runs.

This was Mullally's only second Man of the match award. His first such award came earlier this year against Australia at Brisbane on 10-1-1999.
