Statistical Highlights 20th match: South Africa v Kenya, at Amstelveen, Amsterdam (Holland) on 26-5-1999Mohandas Menon This match was the 1462nd in Limited over international (LOI) history. This match was the 178th in World Cup history. This match was South Africa's 168th and Kenya's 29th in LOIs. This match was South Africa's 19th and Kenya's 10th in the WC. This match was the second meeting between the two sides in LOIs and their first in the WC. The VRA Ground at Amstelveen, Amsterdam in Netherlands (Holland) was cricket's latest venue. Amstelveen became the 117th city and 131st ground to host a LOI match. Netherlands (Holland) also became the 17th country to host a LOI match (i.e. if we take the eight Caribbean countries as one). The ground located on the outskirts of Amsterdam and is also home to the Dutch Cricket Board. It is the only second ground in the world after the St Lawrence Ground at Canterbury in Kent, to have a tree that stands within the boundary near the square-leg area. The ground incidentally has been in existence since 1926. The matches were initially played on matting wickets and it was only in 1995 a turf wicket was laid here. The 66 run partnership between Ravindu Shah and Kennedy Otieno was Kenya's third highest partnership for the first wicket in LOIs. However, the partnership was Kenya's best in a WC match. The previous best was the 62 between the same pair against Zimbabwe at Taunton on 15-5-1999. Shah's 50 was the first for Kenya against South Africa. The previous highest was the 29 runs by Dipak Chudasama at Nairobi (Gymkhana) on 3-10-1996. Kennedy Otieno, at the end of his innings has become the highest scorer for his country with 843 runs. He surpasses the previous run aggregate of 836 runs held by team-mate Steve Tikolo. Kenya betters its previous highest score against South Africa, which was just 103 at Nairobi on 3-10-1996. Lance Klusener's 5-21 represents the best bowling by a South African in the WC. The previous best was 4-11 by Meryick Pringle against West Indies at Christchurch in the 1992 WC. Klusener's figures however equals the best bowling against Kenya in a WC match. Zimbabwean Paul Strang had identical figures at Patna in the 1996 WC match. Incidentally, both Strang and Klusener have the second best bowling figures against Kenya in a LOI match. The best figures in any LOIs against Kenya remains with South African Allan Donald who has figures of 6-23 at Nairobi (Gym) on 3-10-1996. Thomas Odoyo joins his captain Aasif Karim to become the joint highest wicket-taker for his country with 24 wickets. It was South Africa's ninth WC victory in the last ten matches. Lance Klusener won his third successive man of the match award. He now joins England's Graham Gooch to become the only second player to win three successive awards in a WC tournament. Gooch had achieved this feat during the 1987 WC.
