Thakre elected unopposed as BJP president, will take over on May 3Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kushabhau Thakre was today declared elected unopposed as president of the party. The announcement to this effect was made by returning officer Jana Krishnamurthy. Thakre will assume charge from L K Advani on May 3 at the party's national council meeting at Gandhinagar. Thakre had undergone 19 months imprisonment during Emergency in 1975. After his release from jail, when the Bharatiya Jana Sangh was merged with the Janata Party, Thakre was made president of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the Janata Party. In 1979, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Khandva in Madhya Pradesh. After the formation of Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980, Thakre held the key party posts of vice-president and general secretary. UNI
