Back-2-School Galas

By the first week of September, most universities here and in nearby Cambridge would have opened, but the Desis will have to wait till September 23 for their back to school gala, Nirvana, at Club 8-Track.

With DJ RB from New York playing tracks from his latest album, Night Life, the evening also promises hip-hop, Latino music and bhangra beat.

Given the fact that there are over a dozen universities including Harvard and MIT, and huge number of students from India and the neighboring countries, Desi music buffs wonder why Boston is lagging behind in the Desi music race.

"Apart from a large number of Indian students, there are hundreds of young Indian American professionals in and around Boston," muses party-buff and film-maker Suprotim Bose. "Surely they like to have a mast time."

"Perhaps, it is a question of time before the Desi party boom starts in Boston," he says.

Should be 18 to join the Nirvana gala, bring college ID or driver's license. Strictly no sneakers, hats or jeans. Doors open at 10 pm.

Club 8-Track is located at 275 Tremont Street at the Boylston tram stop.

The Boston gala is among the half a dozen back-to-school events announced in a handful of major cities. By the end of this month, many more announcements are expected.

Unlike many Desi Mast parties, the back to school events not only allow 18 year old students but also aim their programs at this age segment. Usually, you have to be 21 to join similar galas.

Some of the back to school events are held this month.

For instance in Houston, the Back 2 School Jamm, is scheduled for August 19 at Club Fusion. With Yogi, DJ AlX and several local talents, the event which starts at 9 pm.

The entertainment is organized keeping 18 plus crowd in mind. Organizers say that no jeans, no baggy jeans, T-shirts and hats.

In Queens, New York, School Bash '99 is being held on September 9 starting at noon with DJ Shawn and Raj. This is an area with a large number of Indians from the Caribbean not far from the venue. So be prepared for the Trinidadian or Guyanese beat.

The event is scheduled at Kasturi Country Club, 35-15 Avenue Long Island City; $15 with invitation cards.

To reach the club take R/G train to 36 street, walk to 36th Avenue and you will come to the club.

In Washington DC, the Dhamaka group presents the gala for 18-plus crowd on September 11, with New York's DJ Karma and DC's DJ Mo.

And in Chicago, the Labor Day bash could also become a back to school event at Club 720. The September 5 event starts 10 pm and will go on till 4 am.

The organizers insist on "strict dress code."
