Curfew relaxed for three hours
in old city areas of Jammu

With the situation fast returning to normal, the curfew in the old city areas of Jammu was relaxed for three hours from 0900 hours to 1200 hours on Wednesday, police said.

According to the officials, if the situation remains normal curfew relaxation may be extended till night.

However, authorities decided to continue the indefinite curfew for the third day in the areas of Narwal, Nanak Nagar, Digiana and some new areas of Jammu keeping in view the tension in these areas.

Police said that the curfew in the old city areas was being relaxed from 0900 hrs to 1200 hrs since the situation remained peaceful on Tuesday night.

Curfew was relaxed for two hours on Tuesday evening in the winter capital city and adjoining areas but keeping in view the prevailing tension, authorities decided to continue it at night.

During the relaxation, from 1700 hours to 1900 hours, no untoward incident was reported from any of the sensitive areas like Narwal, Nanak Nagar and Digiana Ashram.

The situation got tense on Monday after killing of a Sikh person in police firing in Narwal. People, police and administrative authorities turned out in large numbers for the dead man's funeral.

Regarding relaxing curfew in the sensitive areas, a decision would be taken only after reviewing the situation during the day at a high-level meeting.

Meanwhile, a bandh was observed in Udhampur and R S Pura towns of Jammu division to protest Saturday's killing of six Sikhs by militants in Srinagar, official sources said.

No untoward incident had been reported till noon from Udhampur and R S Pura towns and police was maintaining vigil in these areas, they said.

As a precautionary measure, all educational institutions in the districts of Jammu, Udhampur and Kathua were closed, the sources said.

Curfew was imposed in Jammu city and Udhampur town on Monday apprehending violence following the bandh called in Jammu to protest the killing of six Sikhs.
