Six policemen, including an inspector, have been suspended for dereliction of duty, harassment and illegal detention of Mir Mohammed Ali Khan who committed suicide by jumping into a well in Santosh Nagar locality of Hyderabad.
In a statement on Thursday night, Police Commissioner M V Krishna Rao announced the suspension of Inspector C Rajeshwar Reddy, Sub-Inspector N Ashok Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspectors L Narsingh Rao and Mahbubsaab, Head Constable Shaikh Osman Basha and constable M A Aleem - all attached to the Santosh Nagar police station - in connection with Ali's death.
Ali had been accused of attempting to rape a minor girl.
His wife had earlier lodged a complaint alleging that Ali had been harassed and detained illegally by the Santosh Nagar police.
A criminal case under sections 323 and 343 of the Indian Penal Code and section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been registered against the police personnel, Rao said.
The investigation has been entrusted to the assistant commissioner of police in charge of Santosh Nagar police station, he said.
The suspended men have been asked not to leave the city without prior permission of the police commissioner till completion of the inquiry, he added.
